DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL & PEDIATRIC ONCOLOGY
 
The department has dedicated medical and pediatric oncology wings, BMT services and clinical trial wing. The department started functioning since 1972 with 100 bedded indoor facility for adult patients and established a separate dedicated 50 bedded pediatric oncology centre in 1992. Department has separate clinical trial wing and Bone Marrow Transplantation facility (Estd. 2000).
 
Services:
The department of Medical and Paediatric Oncology provides comprehensive care for adult and paediatric patients with solid tumours and haematological malignancies. Every year approx. 5,700 new adult patients are registered under medical department and more than 10,000 patients receive curative or palliative chemotherapy.
The Indumati Kinariwala Paediatric Oncology center was established in 1994 and it is one of it's kind in India. Number of cancer patients registering in Paediatric center per year are 1100 (Haematological malignancies – 435, Solid tumours – 487). In 2010 about 7000 chemotherapies were given, 3861 minor procedures were performed in Paediatric cancer patients. The center also has special OPD for care of central lines (PICC and Hickmen catheter). In 2010, 81 Hickman catheters and 27 PORT were inserted.
The department of medical oncology also participates in clinical trials. The clinical research wing was established in 1995 and since then 53 International and 23 National/GCS trails have been conducted. All the faculty is GCP trained.
The DM Medical Oncology course was initiated in 199- and since then ---- DM students have successfully completed the course and are now valuable asset to the Society both in India and abroad.
GCRI is connected to Major Regional Cancer Centres across the Country through Satellite Communication Network for CME, Care discussion activities.
 
Bone Marrow Transplant and Research Unit
Bone Marrow Transplant Unit was established in August 1999, since then 150 transplants have been performed (Allogeneic and Autologous). The centre gets patients from states of Gujarat , Rajasthan, and Madhyapradesh. 
The bone marrow transplant centre at GCRI is a 4 Bedded Transplant Centre with 8 step down beds. BMT Unit performs on an average one to two transplants in a month. Total 78 Hematopoietic stem cell transplants have been performed including 56 autologous, 21 allogenic& 1 matched unrelated umbilical cord till date.
The centre mainly focuses on conventional fully (6/6) HLA matched sibling allogenic for Thalassemia Major, Acute leukemia and Aplastic Anemia. Autologous Bone marrow transplantation performed mainly for Lymphomas(Hodgkin's and Non Hodgkin's) and Multiple Myeloma. Positive pressure HEPA filters has helped to achieve a very high success rate in the various types of diseases at our centre. Transplant Related Mortality (TRM) is comparable to any other institute in world.
Average cost of Allogenic Transplant is 10 lakh( appx.) and 3-4 lakhs for Autologous transplant.
