Services-Pain and Palliative Care

Palliative Care is integral part of Cancer Care. Palliative care aims to enhance the quality of life of patients and their families who are faced with a life-threatening illness like Cancer.

Palliative care encompasses the whole self, caring for the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. It provides relief from pain and other symptoms of illness such as fatigue, nausea, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite. The goal is to prevent and relieve these symptoms so you can get on with daily life.

To achieve these goals of comprehensive care of cancer patients, a formal “Pain and Palliative Care” services has been started at Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute. Following celebration of “Hospice Day” on 09 Oct 2010, a separate “Pain and Palliative Care” OPD is functional in Room No 11, in afternoon hours. The patients requiring treatment of pain and treatment of symptoms of end stage of disease will be attended by team of Anesthesiologist and Oncologists. A Clinical Psychologist will be doing counseling of the patients. Patients and care takers will be guided about the care of the patient at home. Home Hospice services are also available for patients residing within city limits.

A dedicated computer system with software for patient records will be available for record keeping. Such records will go a long way in providing assistance to Cancer Registry as well. A periodic evaluation of the data will help us in research and further planning of treatment. JivDaya Foundation has agreed to provide financial assistance to these services.
