News- Symposium on “Radiological protection and safety in hospital environment”

The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) in association with Association of Medical Physicists of India (Western Chapter) & Medical Technicians Association organized a one day symposium on “Radiological protection and safety in hospital environment” on 12 th May, 2012 at CAMA Hall, GCRI, Civil Hospital Campus, Ahmedabad. The objective of this symposium was to share knowledge, spread awareness and advocate good radiation safety practice in clinical settings through an optimum use of radiation.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Shilin N. Shukla, Hon. Director, GCRI, Ahmedabad. Dr. R. K Vyas delivered a welcome address. Vote of thanks was given by Satish Pelagade. On this occasion retired medical physicists Shri. D.C. Arora, Shri. Mathur and Shri. R. C. Joshi were felicitated for their service. Government officials from the state and the central governments and many national dignitaries took part in this event. This type of event was organized by us for the first time in Gujarat State.

Medical Physicists, Radiation Safety Officers, Radiation Oncologists, Radiologists and Technologists (Radiotherapy, Radiology & Nuclear Medicine) attended this symposium. The participants were 400 to 450 from all over the country.

Expert professionals from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and Eminent Scientists from Medical Physics were invited to deliver guest lectures. Nine invited speakers delivered lectures on radiation protection and safety.

Dr. J. P. Neema and Shri. P. K. Shah chaired pre-lunch session whereas Dr. G. K. Maheshwari and Dr. Saumil Desai chaired post-lunch session.

Panel discussion was conducted on “How to improve public perception of radiation protection?”
